Yaqeen Nihad-Abdulkarim proudly shows in the attached picture a detailed and decorative Owl sitting on a perch that she created in welding class at St. Patrick’s High School. Not only is the project beautiful, but it is also utilitarian as it can also serve as a 'hanger.'
As a result of taking this course, Yaqeen now sees a future in welding. "As a young woman I was told that welding was for men only and that girls could never become a welder . . . but I never really listened to others and because I didn’t, I passed the class with one of the highest marks. I am very proud of myself for accomplishing the very first step to becoming a welder.” (Yaqeen Nihad-Abdilkarim)
